Chapter 19 - Forced Memory

Lucien gently inhaled a breath, as if lifting a new page of destiny, opened the hard cover book, and found the first page of the first chapter "Pronunciation", and was pleased but not surprised to find that these letters were exactly the same letters used in one of the magical notebooks. Moreover, for Lucien who can fluently use the common language, as long as he masters the pronunciation of the 32 letters and the preliminary spelling rules, he can try to read out the words, compare them with the words and syllables he usually uses, and understand their meanings, and he can also convert the syllables he usually uses into written words by means of the spelling rules and the letters, and by memorizing them in this way, he will learn the common language very quickly. Victor didn't notice Lucien's small elation, and very seriously and earnestly talked about the pronunciation of the thirty-two letters a few times, watching Lucien make some strange marks on the paper and read it back and forth twice, before he was satisfied and headed towards the ordinary teenager next to him: ''You read it dozens of times earnestly, and when I come over here, if you are able to read it once in its entirety with the book on your back, then I'll start teaching you the preliminary spelling rules and grammar." He was only encouraging Lucien, as a beginner, it was impossible to memorize the pronunciation of the thirty-two letters so quickly, unless it was one of those guys with a superb memory, and this kind of guy, if he was willing to work hard, could more than likely have a good time in the business he was doing. Lucien carefully read through the pronunciation of the thirty-two letters, and then compared it with the pronunciation marks he had made on the paper in Chinese combined with English and patterns to make sure there was no mistake, then he quieted his mind, concentrated, and opened the library within his soul. In the library, there is an additional bookshelf called "universal language", on which there is a piece of paper with a strange mark and a black hardcover book, which are exactly the two things in front of him. When he opened the black hardcover book, Lucien was surprised to see that there was only the first page on it, and the rest of the page was blank. So after Lucien flipped the General Language Pronunciation and Elementary Grammar on the small round table from beginning to end at a very fast speed, he was satisfied to see that the black hard-shell book became complete within the soul library. "Exactly as I presumed." Lucien smiled and muttered to himself. With the help of the Soul Library, Lucien was even more confident in learning the universal language in a short period of time, so he began to try to memorize the thirty-two letter pronunciations. The first time a lot of mistakes, the second time still a lot of mistakes, the third time the mistakes began to decrease, but what could be memorized in front of him, some more were forgotten ...... The whole fifteen times, Lucien forced himself to completely memorize the letter pronunciation. Of course, Lucien understands that he is only instantaneous memory, if not consolidated after a period of time, will soon be forgotten, and this process, Lucien again has found that he stimulates the spiritual power used by divine magic has a great help for memorization. After Lucien had swallowed and memorized two more times, Victor finished teaching the circle and once again walked to Lucien's side. He had a faint tiredness on his face, but compared to when Lucien first arrived, he no longer had that state of pacing back and forth and restlessness, and it looked like shifting his attention was a great help in relaxing his spirit. "Lucien, memorize it for me." Victor smiled affectionately and said to Lucien. Lucien didn't hesitate and directly opened his mouth to memorize, halfway through memorizing, he suddenly forgot the pronunciation of a letter, and in the ambiguity, he directly found the pronunciation mark from the paper inside the soul library, and proceeded to finish memorizing smoothly. It wasn't that Lucien wanted to cheat, but he had limited money, being able to seize the time to learn a little more was a little more, even if he didn't master it, with the library in place, it was completely possible to digest it afterward. Victor had been ready to correct Lucien's mispronunciations and places he couldn't remember, and when he finished memorizing, he surprisingly didn't react, and after a while, he asked suspiciously, "You've learned pronunciation before?" This query, in a slightly louder voice, caused the others who were buried in their studies to raise their heads curiously and look at Lucien. "No." Lucien shook his head in the negative. Victor didn't doubt it, and with a slight nod of his head, he praised, "Your memory is very good, very rare. Good, then I'll start teaching you the spelling rules." The others followed and gave Lucien a surprised look, not expecting his memory to be so outstanding, of course, there were also those with sneers and contempt, thinking that Lucien must have learned pronunciation before, otherwise how could he have completely memorized it in a short period of time, and that doing so was nothing more than putting on an act to trick Mr. Victor, and that he might be able to be taken in as a real, music-able student in the future. But this kind of small matter did not stir up much waves, especially since there were three of the noble students inside who were already learning music under Victor, they quickly lowered their heads again and continued looking at the sheet music and music theory knowledge. After that, for nearly an hour, Lucien studied the spelling rules without distractions, and at this time, in this environment, Lucien always realized thoroughly and clearly: Time is money! Because one more day of learning costs a lot more money! "Well, gentlemen and ladies, relax, have some fruit and a cup of tea, and resume your studies later." Victor became seemingly in good spirits and headed for the second floor as the servants served tea and several plates of cut fruit. The tea was served in pale white, simply patterned, glazed porcelain cups with handles, each with jasmine, orange slices, and other things that showed a tangerine color, while the fruits ranged from those that Lucien found familiar to those that he hadn't seen at all, odd kinds. The young man dressed in ordinary noble clothes with dark blue hair like sea water smiled and said to the companions around him, "Mr. Victor seems to have come up with some inspiration, and I'm afraid that today's study will be over if the inspiration keeps coming." He looked a few years older than Lucien, with narrow eyes and a high nose, in his hand was a thin book of sheet music, and within the several noble students, he had the vague feeling of being surrounded by them, except for a noble maiden in a long burgundy gown, who sat demurely, but answered in a lazy tone of voice: "Lotte, if Mr. Victor finishes early, then he'll definitely make up for it at the end of the week, and if he's able to get the new piece done, we'll be able to do recital practice with the orchestra in the next few days. I don't want to just do monotonous music theory studies and plain old flute playing practice, the only way to get better faster is to practice with a proper orchestra." She was about seventeen or eighteen years old, with a bright appearance, long flaming hair, thick and sensual lips, and a waist that wasn't strung thin as if it was going to break like her cousins', because that would cause breathing difficulties, and breathing difficulties were not good for flute playing. Lotte couldn't help but let out a laugh as she looked at the red-haired girl, "The orchestra that works with Mr. Victor, just a few days ago a chief who is so handsome that he seems to be a silver moon, Phyllis, the two of us were accompanying Mr. Victor together at the time, and you want to practice with the orchestra so badly, could it be that you've fallen in love with him?" The principal of the symphony orchestra was the first violinist, and had to play the role of conductor when there was no conductor. "Don't insult me with your playboy mind, I just think he's a classy violinist, much better than the original Mr. Chief." Phyllis retorted, but with a strange flushed mass on her face, "Don't you think he played brilliantly when he played the 'Violin Sonata No. 1 in g minor unaccompanied'? Don't you think you surpass him in the caliber of your violin playing?" At the mention of music, Lotte immediately became serious and excited, and began discussing various musical knowledge and pieces with Phyllis, and several other noble students, interjecting a sentence or two from time to time, were clearly interested in the topic, and even the brunette girl among the commoner students they had been treating coldly received nods of approval when she couldn't help but interrupt to make an insightful remark. In Alto, music was another universal language. Of course, the noble students continued to ignore the commoner students and Lucien consciously or unconsciously, while the commoner students also consciously or unconsciously ignored Lucien and tried to get close to the noble students. There were no cold words, no sarcastic ridicule, only a deep disconnect and coldness. Perhaps, in the hearts of the noble students, the general citizens, as well as the paupers, were not worthy of their own harsh attitudes, after all, they didn't even share a common language, and just habitually excluded them from their own circles, a kind of belittlement that wasn't much on their minds. For all of this, Lucien didn't care at all, scrambling and grasping for time to learn, like a sponge that had dried up for a long time and was thrown back into the sea of knowledge, greedily absorbing the nutrients. But from their discussions, Lucien occasionally heard some sentences and humming, and realized that the music of this world, whether it was scales, or melodies, was very similar to that of the earth, and only differed in the expression of specific musical symbols. "What a group of serious students." Lucien looked up at them who were eagerly discussing, took a sip of the black tea with jasmine petals and an odd flavor, ate a piece of fruit that might have been a sorbet, and resumed his own absorbed study. Mr. Victor's inspiration didn't last long, and after ten minutes or so he walked off with a look of exhaustion and agitation on his face. After teaching his students in earnest, though, his irritation was much better. Lucien, on the other hand, finally learned most of the spelling rules and memorized them by relying on his soul library before the end of the hour of struggle. At ten minutes past four, the study ended, and everyone stood up and left the hall, except for Lotte, Phyllis, and a noble teenager named Herodotus who stayed behind to work on his instrumental studies. Lucien recalled what he had learned today and walked slowly, while the three commoner students, exchanging laughter with each other, walked at the front with light footsteps, their gazes would often look at the two noble students in the center who were discussing music, but did not dare to get too close, as for Lucien, no matter if it was them or the two noble students, the man and the woman, they only occasionally swept a faint glance. After leaving the gate, two carriages came from somewhere, the brown horses were tall and robust, snorting, then the two noble students boarded the carriages sent by their respective families in the envious gazes of the commoner students, and slowly left. Regardless of their family's situation, as long as they didn't starve to death, most nobles would choose to maintain a minimum of decency. The three commoner students quietly watched the carriage disappear behind the tall trees at the corner before leaving in the direction of the Purple Lily District. Lucien was like a nerd, silently reciting what he had learned today as he strolled down the boulevard. ※※※ "You're actually studying with Mr. Victor? He's an outstanding musician. Oh, little Evans, are you really going to inherit Uncle Joel's dream of being a musician." At dinner, Joel jokingly said after learning about the teacher Lucien was learning words from. Lucien responded with the same humor, "Of course, I will become a great musician in the future." After the joyous dinner, Lucien returned home early, lay down on his bed, which was smashed to the point where he could only barely lie down in it, and opened the library to the magical notebook written in the common language, trying to spell out the pronunciation and decipher the meaning of the words. Of course, because of the inevitable problems of accent, vocabulary accumulation, and the fact that grammar had not yet been mastered, Lucien did not have the luxury of expecting that in just one day's study, he would be able to read the notes and begin to learn magic, but merely used it as a way to review and consolidate what he had learned during the day.
